10 Cool Things!

Futurama is one of my favorite shows ever made. I think the show is hilarious, but that isn't why it's cool. I think it's cool because the show asks a lot of real, thought provoking questions in a comedic way. I think that is interesting. Taking some kind of deep thought and presenting it in a comedy makes a show that is funny, but has deep substance and that is something I want to learn to do.

I love the fall. I think it is really cool how the film uses color in such unique and interesting ways. It makes me feel like every color, wardrobe choice, and composition was chosen for a very specific reason. Talking about purposeful imagery, I think this is the most purposeful film I have ever seen in my entire life.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep asks so many important questions about what constitutes humanity and why we need to understand what humanity is. I have always been interested in what makes a person a person, so this book was so intriguing to me. Humanity is the most puzzling concept to me because a lot of times I see more of it in animals or something that seems inanimate than I do in an actual human.

Interesting Ball

One of my favorite short films of all time. Interesting ball was made by the Daniels, the same people who made Swiss Army Man. I love this short film again because of the deep philosophical questions it asks, but in a weird and hilarious way. It is interesting they way they promote complex ideas in a way that doesn't take itself too seriously. It almost makes it easier to think about those concepts.

The Last of Us is a video game about zombies. First of all, I think it's really cool because I'm obsessed with zombies and all the different things they can represent. On a deeper level. It makes me think about what it means to really care for someone. It also makes me think about what I am willing to sacrifice for things I love. This was all around the best narrative in a video game I have every played.

I've used these Flex Lights on a few sets now and they are amazing! You can literally just tape them to things if you want them lit and that is the most magical concept to me. Being able to place lights in tight spaces or just in places you never could before has opened up so many possibilities.

The concept of virtual reality is always fascinating to me, and I think the HTC Vive has done it the best. First of all, the vive tracks movements around a room, which I think is really awesome. Secondly, it tracks hand movements and lets you grip things in a game, allowing for deeper interaction in a virtual world. This adds a new level of virtual reality that I am a lot more invested in than just watching something.

In Your Arms - Kina Grannis

I've been obsessed with this music video since the moment I saw it. It took them two years to make it it is literally the singer on a glass table and under her are thousands of skittles. It blows my mind to think of how dedicated they were to making this video and the result is so awesome. And it's just a really fun video to watch.

Natasha Braier is my new favorite cinematographer. The things she does with light are incredible on so many levels. She just shot Neon Demon for Nicholas Refin and it was so gorgeous! I've never seen anyone makes such beautiful images with light and color. Also her use of negative space was also so pretty. I love seeing even photos she takes.

Pokemon go was such an amazing thing, but I think the thing that really got me was the community it created. It made such nice community of nerds who just wanted to hang out with other nerds. It was also really cool to see people coming together to help one another catch powerful and rare pokemon. I think the purpose of the internet is to create these kinds of communities and I really liked what this app did.

  1. I remember the first time watching the music video for In Your Arms by Kina Grannis and being completely mind-blown, as well. What a cool idea full of a ridiculous amount of dedication, but respectable, none the less. I think that continuity in the films I make is hard enough, so I can't imagine having to worry about a project this big.

  2. You seem to be really interested in doing cool things with the technologies we have available to us, or pushing those technologies into new places. That's an important thing I think I often don't pay enough attention to personally. I love that you're focused on seeing the world in the new ways like that--ways that are just within reach--and pushing the boundaries of what we know and what we can do.

  3. You find purpose in many parts of life, even in things where that doesn't seem to be their reason for existing. It takes a very keen eye to read messages in the unusual, and you have that eye, Jase! It's also really cool how you have access to those flex lights; those look so useful!

  4. I like the variety here Jase. It was fun to read all these diverse topics! Your virtual reality post was cool. I know nothing about those, so it was really fun to read why you like it.

  5. Jase, you are a very diverse and unique person! I actually have not heard of most of things on this list, which only reminds me of how different each person is from the next. I think it's great to be different because we would all be boring if we were the same. I totally agree with your post about Pokémon GO; it really has created a great community, and it got me to go out and spend time with my sisters this summer.

  6. Dude. The Fall. My little heart just couldn't bear to watch all the shots in that film and realize that I may never shoot anything as good as the worst shot in that film! Haha. Great choice!

  7. I love how much this list reflected on peoples' relationships with media and technology, which is something I feel you're passionate about. You're really good at discussing things that exist beyond the surface value of books, movies, games, TV shows, technologies, y'know. It's so interesting to think about how humanity's collective fascinations and fears influence all those things. I'm so jazzed that you listed The Last of Us, I'm in the middle of it and I agree with everything you said about it! Also, Flex Lights a.k.a. Miracles.

  8. Jase, I've heard you talk about a lot of these things with passion. I like that you are able to find inspiration and interest in a wide spectrum of areas. While your focus is on media and media creation, you're able to see inspiration and learn from a lot of different types of film. Recently I've been learning about The Last of Us, and I'm excited to learn more about other things on your list.
